by Tuesday, September 23, 2025

Uganda’s Electoral Commission has formally confirmed President Yoweri Museveni as a candidate in the 2026 general election, clearing the way for the 81-year-old leader to seek a seventh consecutive term in office.

Electoral Commission chairperson Simon Byabakama announced the decision after verifying Museveni’s nomination papers in Kampala, urging all candidates, their agents, and the public to maintain peace and respect throughout the campaign period.

The ruling National Resistance Movement had earlier endorsed Museveni as its sole flagbearer and party chairman. Having led the country for nearly four decades, Museveni said his campaign would focus on wealth creation, universal access to education in government schools, improved healthcare, road maintenance, and tackling crime.

The commission confirmed that presidential campaigns will officially begin on 29 September, with voting set for 2 January 2026.
